Brunei to Build 30 MW Solar Power Plant

Brunei is developing a 30-megawatt (MW) solar power plant.

The newly established joint venture company, Seri Suria Power (B) Sdn. Bhd., will be responsible for the construction and operation of the project. The company is jointly owned by Atlantic Blue Sdn. Bhd. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysian solar installer Solarvest Holdings Bhd.), Khazanah Satu Sdn. Bhd., and Serikandi Oilfield Services Sdn. Bhd.

Atlantic Blue holds a 34% stake in the joint venture, Khazanah Satu holds 30%, and Serikandi holds 36%.

Solarvest confirmed in a filing to Bursa Malaysia that the Brunei government has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), effective from the commercial operation date of the plant. Construction of the plant is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

The solar power plant will occupy a 33.3-hectare rehabilitated landfill site in Kampung Belimbing village, Brunei-Muara District, northern Brunei. A land lease agreement for the project has been secured with the government.

Once operational, the facility will become Brunei's largest solar installation and the country's first solar project developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Brunei's cumulative installed solar capacity remained unchanged at 5 MW by the end of 2024 compared to 2021. Brunei aims to have renewable energy sources contribute 30% to its power mix by 2035.
