Nordic solar developer Alight has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with coatings supplier AkzoNobel to collaborate on building a 15-megawatt peak (MWp) solar park in Uppsala County, Sweden. Fully developed and operated by Alight, the facility is expected to generate 16 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually upon completion in 2027, enough to power approximately 3,200 households.
Under the agreement, AkzoNobel will procure a portion of the electricity at a fixed price for its adhesive plant in Kristinehamn and protective coatings facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. Johan Hernström, Head of PPAs at Alight, stated: "Partnering with AkzoNobel demonstrates our shared commitment to the energy transition. As an industry leader, they are actively driving sustainable practices." This solar project will help AkzoNobel achieve its goal of halving its carbon footprint by 2030 and aligns with Alight's vision for clean energy expansion.
Wijnand Bruinsma, Director of Sustainability at AkzoNobel, commented: "Collaborating with Alight is a key step in our plan to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2030. While all our European plants (excluding Turkey) are already powered by green electricity, this project will further optimize the energy mix for our Swedish operations." Beyond the Swedish project, AkzoNobel is evaluating PPA opportunities in Germany and exploring off-site renewable energy solutions for its Malmö plant.
This partnership marks another significant development for Alight in the Nordic region. In April 2025, the company signed an agreement with automotive safety supplier Autoliv to supply power from a 100 MWp solar park in Eurajoki, Finland, scheduled for operation in 2026.
